Turbine blade protection

Lightning tape

Lightning tape applied to a turbine blade.

Traditional lightning protection of blades are ensured using a receptor placed on the surface of the blade and connected through an internal down conductor. It is dangerous to allow the lightning voltage potential inside the blade construction. A better alternative is to keep the lightning current as well as voltage potential on the outside of the blade. Well designed placing of conductive tape has demonstrated the ability to conduct small as well as large strikes to the rod of the blade for a controlled conduction down to earth.
